MOVIE ABOUT CENTURION AND JESUS MOVIE

No movie could survive doing something line that, and Risen is no exception, essentially destroying its one good idea. The problem is though that Clavius is witness to the post-Resurrection ministry of Jesus, but because he is not in the Bible, he is forced to be purely a witness, save for a few lines of dialogue with the other characters, rendering the main character of the film, essentially pointless for large chunks of the movie. The final nail in this film’s coffin though is in how thoroughly it screws up its one good idea, the telling of the story though the eyes of a Roman. And of course the acting, directing and writing here is all strictly paint by the numbers. There is absolutely no imagination or skill in this film at all, it is almost as if the film was made by people who did not care about how good it would be, instead banking that Christians would make the movie profitable, and as a Catholic, that does trouble me, not just because of how cynical that it, but also because it is right. Risen though does not of this and instead we are just left with a very boring film in addition to being a confused one. Movies focused on Jesus have a problem in that audiences in West, even unchurched ones, tend to know the basic outline of the story well enough that surprise is impossible, so instead the movie must be told in a skillful manner to compensate. It is also as obvious as the day is long that this film is not shot in the Middle East.Īnd that is another problem with the film, for as confused as it is, it is also a very dull film. The scene is not only show in the most vague, inoffensive way imaginable, but it is also very dull. In particular, the transfiguration (when Jesus ascended into heaven) is particularly done. And the film is incredibly Biblically inaccurate as well, leading to even more confusion as to who exactly this is aimed at.

I am not a sticker for historical accuracy, but Roman soldiers using the Greek names for the gods is distracting, as is first century Jews using Christian religious terms.

Considering this, the film is also widely historically and biblically inaccurate, to the point where I am really wondering if a fact checker was included in the budget. Parts of the film make it appear as it Risen is going for a few last dollars of The Passion’s audience, while other times Jesus comes across as so vague it feels more like they are going after non-Christians who happen to think Jesus was a cool fellow. The biggest problem the film has it that it cannot decide what its audience is. It is an idea that has not really been done before, and certainly has some potential to make an interesting film.īut beyond this one basic premise, the film is a mess. Instead the film focuses on the hunt for the body lead by Roman tribune Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) and then latter as Clavius, a pagan, reacts and comes to terms with the Resurrection. The film actually does have an interesting premise, and is the one thing that prevents the film from being a total failure in that the film decides to forgo portraying Jesus’ early ministry and only shows a bit of the crucifixion. With that in mind, I actually decided to check out Risen and while I was not expecting a classic, I was not prepared to encounter just what a jumbled mess of a film I did. Lately, thanks to The Hateful Eight’s Roadshow release, Hail, Caesar, and the upcoming theatrical re-release of The Ten Commandments from 1956, my interest in the Biblical Epics of the 1950’s has been greatly peaked.
